Home Remedies for Carpet Stains

If you are able to wipe up the spill as soon as it happens it is usually easier to clean and get the stain out of your carpet. 

The first thing to do is to get absorbent paper towels and mop up as much liquid and stain as possible.  Do this immediately if possible.

If washing it straight away with warm or hot water is likely to help do that next.  Sometimes even a dry stain can be rehydrated with water to assist in its removal.

Pet stains can be cleaned up with a steam cleaner, if you have one available.

Some household items that can help in dealing with carpet stains are:

  • Dishwashing soap

  • Household ammonia – use diluted.  One teaspoon to ½ cup water

  • Hydrogen peroxide

  • Isopropyl-rubbing alcohol

  • White vinegar

An example of when to use isopropyl rubbing alcohol is to remove greasy marks or ink stains.  Blot the stain with paper towel.  Then put some rubbing alcohol on paper towel and blot again. 

To use detergents to clean carpet stains, blot the mark with the detergent solution.  Rinse the detergent out of the carpet with water.

When using white vinegar dilute it to one part vinegar to three parts water.Use vinegar solution for things such as pet stains coffee stains, and water stains.If using vinegar to remove beer or wine stains try using equal parts of vinegar and water.

Some of these remedies may help you in your care of your carpets.  Remember that the fresher the carpet stains, the easier it is to remove it.  Try the easier methods first.  If you are not sure if something will harm your carpet do a spot test in an inconspicuous place before treating the stain.
